It's a few days late but we should all celebrate the birthday of Coco Chanel.
Born Gabrielle Bonheur Chanel in Saumur, France on 19 August 1883, Coco was one of the greatest fashion designers of the 20th century. Despite humble beginnings in an orphanage, Coco raised herself up to become the woman that we know and love today. Leaving the orphanage at age eighteen, Coco started off as a cabaret singer and was nicknamed "Coco": some say this was because of a song she sang, while Coco herself once said that it was "a shortened version of coquette, the French word for 'kept woman'". Coco entered the world of fashion after starting to design hats as a hobby, later progressing to clothes and perfumes and it is for those reasons that we remember her today.
So, all hail to the glorious Coco Chanel - raise a glass in celebration of an amazing woman who created elegant, classic designs which have stood the test of time.
